Jazz Aotearoa and The Third Eye present: The Arthur Street Loft Orchestra - a creative residency in the heart of Te Aro.

This week: Daniel Beban - Daily Deaths.

Daily Deaths - a new, extended composition for large ensemble based on 7 months of Covid19 data spreadsheets. The 16-piece ensemble features Gerard Crewdson and Dan Yeabsley (tuba), Nell Thomas and Rachelle Eastwood (flute), Aiko Sato and Gareth Thompson (trombone), Jake Baxendale and Glen Downie (alto sax), Bridget Kelly and Blair Latham (bass clarinet), Toby Laing and Oscar Laven (trumpet), Tristan Carter and Chris Prosser (violin), Patrick Bleakley and Isaac Smith (double bass).

Plus another new, shorter work for two tubas, with two percussionists using found objects in the bell of the tubas. Featuring Dan Yeabsley and Joe Lindsay (tuba), Cory Champion and Daniel Beban (percussion).

Daniel Beban is a musician and sound artist who lives in Wellington. He performs on a number of different instruments in groups including Orchestra of Spheres, Sign of the Hag, Sunburst Finish, Micro Soft Voices, UMU, Devils Gate Outfit and others. He builds sound sculptures and invented instruments out of found objects and recycled materials. Through his work as a radio sound engineer, Daniel has experimented at length with reel-to-reel tape machines. He is founding director of the Frederick Street Sound and Light Exploration Society and its associated venues Fred’s (2009-2012) and currently Pyramid Club, an important centre for creative music and art in Wellington.
