Ōtautahi-based Saxophonist and Clarinetist Reuben Derrick joins Pōneke-based Bassist Isaac Smith, drummer Andy Wright, and brass player Gerard Crewson for a night of acoustic improvisation and exploration.

Reuben Derrick is a saxophonist, clarinettist, improviser and composer. His work encompasses interdisciplinary collaboration with instrumentalists, songwriters, actors, dancers and sound sculptors, as well as solo performance. His improvisational work traverses melody and noise, and pulse and texture, in ways that engage space and occasion. His composition focuses on sound design, pieces for ensembles and environmental sound. He regularly performs and records, in a multitude of contexts, with many of Aotearoa’s most exciting and innovative musicians. In recent years he has also worked in Europe, Australia and Sri Lanka.

Composer and performer Isaac Smith is at home on a number of instruments, including double bass and modular synthesisers.  He has released numerous solo albums under Meeps, performs with groups including Orchestra of  Spheres, improvises and runs workshops in deep listening and improvisation.

Gerard Crewdson is a multi-instrumentalist specialising in brass instruments as well as visual artist. Gerard is a celebrated Pyramid Club regular and has been a fixture of the Te Whanganui-a-Tara improvisation scene for several decades.

Andy Wright is a percussionist and keyboardist with over 15 years playing experience both nationally and internationally. He is a regular performer of improvised music at Pyramid Club. Also an accomplished painter, Andy exhibited a collection of paintings as part of Pyramid Club's 2022 gallery programme.
