Rosie Whinray’s 'Flotsam & Jetsam: Beach-Combing Field Notes' documents twelve years of Ōwhiro Bay beach-combing. Resident on the South Coast of Wellington, at the edge of the fish's mouth, Rosie's holy ground (the ten-mile radius around a person's dwelling-place according to English mythologist Martin Shaw) is half-ocean, a place where land and sea meet and exchange views. The beach is a site of perpetually-dynamic ordered chaos. Photos, drawings, and writings emerge from long-form observation of its patterns, life-forms, specimens, and artefacts.

Rosie Whinray is a multi-disciplinary artist, writer, and Wizard of Te Whanganui-a-Tara / Wellington. She draws inspiration from history, natural science, and oral tradition. Record-keeping is the backbone of her art, taking various forms including beach-combing and ink drawing - from 2010 to 2020 she made an ink drawing every day. Her current work takes the form of written words. Responsive and generative in equal measure, her many-stranded practice concerns memory, chance, and place.
