Dancing in your head: episode 21 - Jasmine Lovell-Smith
In this episode Dan is joined by local saxophonist and composer Jasmine Lovell-Smith. All but one of the tracks come from albums of Jasmine's, recorded in New York, Mexico, and most recently Wellington.
Jasmine studied at Massey University in the mid 2000's focusing on tenor saxophone. Moving to New York she started a journey more deeply exploring composition and the forms that can lead to nuanced improvisation. After living in Mexico, Jasmine returned to Wellington with a smaller saxophone and a full repertoire of her original works. Jasmine has been one of the central figures involved in the Arthur Street Loft Orchestra, an experiment in big band music playing wholly original local compositions. Jasmine is a player who brings sensitivity and deep listening to other people's works, and creates works that cradle players into lyrical realms they would not have discovered alone.
